Exploring Digitalization in New Venture Ecosystems – Three Essays Sadreddin, Arman Despite significant business opportunities made possible through digital technology advancements, readily available digital technologies such as social media, mobile technologies, analytics, and cloud computing (SMAC) are often overlooked and not used by many new ventures. This thesis looks at digital entrepreneurial affordances created through interactions between goal-oriented new ventures and readily available digital technologies to address this problem. In particular, this thesis identifies several affordances and explores the actualization process of these digital entrepreneurial affordances over time to develop dynamic capabilities in new ventures. Exploratory multiple case studies are used. The first paper in this thesis examines the characteristics of readily available digital technologies and the goals of new ventures to identify digital entrepreneurial affordances that can enable dynamic capabilities. The second paper builds on the findings of the first paper, using a configurational approach to explore the actualization process of the identified affordances to further identify patterns of dynamic capability building at new venture ideation and development stages. Finally, the third paper examines interrelated bundles of digital entrepreneurial affordances that can result in the development of technology-enabled dynamic capabilities and higher firm performance.
